Touching Kiwa

Co-creation of Panorama Projection and Hamon Performance

Tomoko Mukai / Sachiko Nagata

“Touching Kiwa” will be co-created as a collaboration of a spatial projection by Tomoko Mukai
and sound performance with iron slit drums named “Hamon” by Sachiko Nagata.

As a note on the “Hamon”, it is an original instrument produced by the Japanese iron sculptor Teppei Saito.
Saito was inspired by the sound of water drops created by the Japanese traditional garden ornament “Suikinkutsu”.
“Hamon” is written with the Chinese letters “the sound of wave patterns”. Its pronunciation itself means ripple.

This performance will be held in the auditorium of Bunyukaku, an eco-building of the Tochoji-temple,
recognized as the world-first passive house of temple architectures.

This performance consists of a panorama projection and Hamon sound performance.
Its spatial experience through images of wild nature and “constructed nature” from across the globe
will emerge like encountering distant nature
as if travelling between real and imaginary landscapes.

The whole-length performance can be viewed only by recorded video streaming between July 20 and August 18.

At the venue, the 40-minutes viewing of a looped audiovisual installation will be available, and 20-minutes live performances will be held several times.
