Co-creation of Public Projection and Hamon Performance

Tomoko Mukai / Sachiko Nagata

“At the Kiwa” will be co-created as a collaboration of a spatial projection by Tomoko Mukai
and a sound performance with iron slit drums named “Hamon” by Sachiko Nagata.

As a note on the “Hamon”, it is an original instrument produced by the Japanese iron sculptor Teppei Saito.
Saito was inspired by the sound of water drops created by the Japanese traditional garden ornament “Suikinkutsu”.
“Hamon” is written with the Chinese letters “the sound of wave patterns”. Its pronunciation itself means ripple.

Shinjuku is a central location of a large metropolis.
Through each era, it has been developed over time with artificially constructed water’s edges.
The area around Tochoji Temple was called Naito-Shinjuku as the former center of Shinjuku in the 17th century.
Today it is the center of Shinjuku.

A public projection onto the temple’s architecture contrasts images from far away with the skyscrapers.
The skyscrapers serve as a borrowed landscape.
The sound of “Hamon” will harmonize with urban environmental sounds and digital soundscape.

The performance will emerge like a journey at the “KIWA”, the water’s edge in urban life.

This performance can be viewed at the venue and online live streaming.
Before the performance, the public talk will also be streamed online.
