Kiwa

How do we situate ourselves in nature?
Isn’t nature always an object of human constructions and projections?
In Japanese, Kiwa refers to both spatial boundaries and threshold moments in the process of change.
In her Kiwa project, artist and designer Tomoko Mukai uses this term
to explore the boundaries and transitional spaces between human-made and natural environments.

Since 2019, Mukai has been creating installations and platforms
for interdisciplinary dialogue and encounters in this context.
In her work, she looks for ways to intensify the experience of our environments and expand our everyday lives.

This installation is based on a project presented in 2024 at the Museum Insel Hombroich in Germany,
a place whose motto is Art in parallel to Nature.
The installation will be adapted and reconstructed to fit the spaces of the OAG-Haus – Deutsches Kulturzentrum in Tokyo –
an interface where the cultures of Japan and Germany encounter.
During the exhibition, small plants and natural objects will be collected from the surroundings of the Institute in the midst of the city
and will be integrated into the installation, gradually changing it over time.

The Hamon Music Performance by percussionist Sachiko Nagata will take place during the exhibition.
